Oslo's Airport Express Train, Flytoget, is used by almost 8 million people a year, and is the preferred means of transport between the airport and the city. Fast, sustainable and reliable.
With increasing competition, and a need for additional rolling stock to support new routes, Flytoget needed an improved brand experience to protect their position as Norway's favourite customer service brand.
Working at Seymourpowell, Andy Sykes supported Flytoget to create award-winning new trains. Andy provided design review of rolling stock tenders, developed the train layout, the design of the new interiors, new seating and the colours, materials and finishes.
Andy worked on the exterior design including the livery of both the new trains and the legacy rolling stock.
Working with the whole Seymourpowell team, Andy was involved with the creation of an integrated customer experience across all the passenger touchpoints.
A key focus of the new trains was improving accessibility. The original rolling stock was well-loved by passengers and crew, but fell short on accessibility. Inclusive design would be considered from the outset.
A low-floor car in the centre of the train enables level boarding and provides social and convivial wheelchair accommodation and accessible toilet together with flexible spaces for groups and travellers with children and prams.
The new trains won the Design and Architecture Norway - DOGA Innovation award for Universal Design in 2020.
